A Catholic knight has publicly announced his departure from Christianity in protest over the Catholic Church’s alleged failure to recognize the late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah’s role in the construction of the Our Lady of Assumption Cathedral in Nnewi, Anambra State.
Sir James Louise, popularly known as Ebube Anaedo, expressed his frustration after the cathedral’s official inauguration this week, which drew prominent personalities from across Nigeria. According to reports, Senator Ubah had initiated and largely funded the project, completing approximately 85 percent of the structure before changes in diocesan leadership occurred.
Tensions reportedly began in 2022 when the newly appointed bishop of Nnewi, Dr. Jonas-Benson Okoye, allegedly asked Senator Ubah to step aside from the project. The directive sparked controversy, with many insisting that the senator’s substantial contributions should be fully acknowledged.
During the inauguration ceremony, Sir James Louise protested publicly, noting that Senator Ubah’s name was absent from both the inauguration brochure and the ceremony itself. A video circulating online shows the Catholic knight visibly emotional as he removed his shoes and cap—symbols of his knighthood—while declaring his exit from Christianity.
“This is my last day as a Christian. I’m done. This is awful,” he said. “How could anyone believe that this cathedral, which Ifeanyi Ubah slaved to build, could be inaugurated without a mention of his name? This is bad. I’m done with Christianity.”
The incident has generated widespread discussion on social media, with many users criticizing the Catholic Church for allegedly failing to honor the late senator’s contributions to the landmark religious project.
