Fr. Kelvin Ugwu, a Catholic priest in Nigeria, has dismissed online reports claiming that a Nigerian man, Innocent Ndubuisi Okechukwu, married his white partner in a Catholic church.
Fr. Ugwu explained that the ceremony actually took place at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Downers Grove, Illinois, United States—a denomination that permits same-sex marriages. He emphasized that the Catholic Church does not recognize or approve same-sex weddings and would never conduct such ceremonies.
According to Fr. Ugwu, Innocent Okechukwu is a Nigerian composer and pianist with a strong academic background in music. He attended a Catholic minor seminary but did not proceed to major seminary. The groom’s partner, Greg, is a chorister and lector in the Episcopal Church.
The wedding was officiated by Rev. Gregg Morris, rector of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, which is part of the global Anglican Communion. As an Episcopal Church, it is distinct from the Catholic Church and is authorized to conduct religious ceremonies for same-sex couples.
Fr. Ugwu concluded: “I hope this clarification helps. Thanks for your attention!”
