Chelsea Condemns Racist Abuse Targeting Players During UEFA Youth League Match Against Qarabag

Chelsea Football Club has strongly condemned alleged racist abuse directed at its academy players during a UEFA Youth League match in Baku, Azerbaijan, against Qarabag FK.

The incident occurred shortly after 17-year-old forward Sol Gordon scored the opening goal in the 57th minute at the Azersun Stadium. As Gordon and his teammates celebrated near a section of home fans, several supporters allegedly made racist monkey gestures toward the Chelsea players.

Eyewitnesses at the scene reported hearing and seeing racist abuse from at least one fan, leading to a brief stoppage in play as Chelsea players and staff voiced their concerns to Ukrainian referee Dmytro Kubriak. Chelsea staff, including head coach Calum McFarlane, were seen discussing the incident on the sidelines.

Although Chelsea briefly considered abandoning the game, the team ultimately chose to continue and went on to win 5-0, with standout performances from winger Jesse Derry, who scored twice, and substitutes Shim Mheuka and Frankie Runham.

Chelsea Issues Strong Response

In an official statement, Chelsea FC said:

“We are aware of an incident during today’s UEFA Youth League match in Azerbaijan in which, after scoring, a number of our players were subjected to racist abuse.

Racism and all forms of discriminatory behaviour are unacceptable. We strongly condemn the actions of the individual responsible.”

The club confirmed it had lodged an immediate complaint with both the UEFA match delegate and Qarabag, urging a full investigation under UEFA disciplinary procedures. Chelsea also praised their young players’ response, saying they handled the situation “professionally and appropriately” according to UEFA protocols.

Qarabag Apologizes, UEFA To Investigate

A spokesperson for Qarabag FK apologized for the incident, stating it did not reflect the club’s values and promising a full investigation. UEFA’s disciplinary body will review the referee’s match report and is expected to take action in the coming days.

With the win, Chelsea sit top of their UEFA Youth League group with a perfect record of four wins from four matches.
