Chike Opens Up About Awkward Church Encounter That Drove Him Away

Nigerian singer Chike has offered a candid explanation of the uncomfortable experience that made him stop attending church, sharing how a personal encounter from years ago shaped his relationship with organized religion.

Speaking in a recent conversation, the artist recalled visiting a church where he unexpectedly came face-to-face with someone from his past.

Awkward Encounter With Worship Leader

According to Chike, the moment became instantly overwhelming:

“The chick that was leading the praise and worship—we had history. And I couldn’t… I was having flashbacks. And she was kabashing, and I’m like… who’s that.”

The awkwardness and distraction from seeing a former romantic partner on stage made him deeply uncomfortable, prompting him to stop attending the church after only a week.

Chike clarified that his decision to step back from church had nothing to do with losing faith.

Affirming His Belief in God

He explained that he has always believed in God, recalling a personal moment early in his career when he prayed earnestly for divine help while living in Primewater Gardens with his then-girlfriend.

“I just said a prayer. I said, God, I don’t have anybody. I don’t have anything. Just help me.”

Experience With a ‘Potent Edible’

Chike also reflected on a chaotic period shortly after releasing his debut album, revealing that he unknowingly consumed a strong edible.

“Three, four days into the release of my album, I didn’t even know where I was. But that was it.”

Why Church No Longer Works for Him

Although he maintains his belief in God, Chike said the structure of church simply doesn’t fit into his life.

“Church is not for me. There are things that I like that I would not be able to do.”

He emphasized that what truly matters—whether in public life, personal relationships, or leadership—is treating people right.

“You just need to do right. By the people. By the people. By the people. Not necessarily live a certain… Look, since I’m Christian, not certainly live a Christian life…”
