CISLAC Urges Tinubu to Act After FCT Minister Wike Clashes With Military Officer

The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) has condemned what it described as the “reckless and uncivil behaviour” of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike following a recent public confrontation with a military officer. The group warned that such conduct damages Nigeria’s image and undermines public confidence in governance.

In a statement signed by CISLAC Executive Director Auwal Ibrahim Musa (Rafsanjani), who also heads Transparency International Nigeria, the organisation emphasised that public office demands restraint, humility, and discipline rather than arrogance or abuse of power.

“Public officials must be civil and civilised in carrying out their responsibilities and adhere to the code of conduct guiding public office,” Rafsanjani said.
“The idea of public officials attacking security personnel is unacceptable and sends the wrong message about the nation. They must be role models, not symbols of impunity.”

Pattern of Recklessness

CISLAC noted that Wike’s behaviour reflects a consistent pattern of arrogance and lack of emotional control dating back to his tenure as Rivers State governor.

“Governance demands humility, restraint, and respect for institutional boundaries,” the statement added.

The organisation also highlighted that over 52 civil society groups had recently called for an impartial investigation into Wike over allegations of asset concealment, illicit enrichment, and violations of Nigeria’s asset declaration laws.

National Security at Stake

CISLAC described the confrontation as “reckless, disrespectful, and dangerous to national security,” particularly at a time when Nigeria faces multiple internal security threats and international scrutiny.

“The Nigerian Armed Forces remain one of the nation’s most respected institutions. Ridiculing them under current pressures is irresponsible and unacceptable,” the statement said.

The military officer involved was commended for maintaining discipline and professionalism, reflecting the “integrity and command ethics that define Nigeria’s military.”

Call for Presidential Action

Rafsanjani urged President Bola Tinubu to take decisive action, stating that public officials who lack self-control and respect for institutions should not hold office.

“This is the first time in recent years that a minister has openly disrespected the Armed Forces. It must not be tolerated,” he warned.

CISLAC further criticised Wike’s frequent outbursts and “militarised approach to governance” as evidence of poor emotional intelligence for a public servant. The organisation demanded that Wike publicly apologise to the officer involved, the Armed Forces, and President Tinubu.

“National security must always come first. Leadership should strengthen, not weaken, public trust in institutions,” CISLAC concluded.
“The integrity of our Armed Forces and Nigeria’s international image demand nothing less.”
