An operative of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) was fatally stabbed on Thursday by a middle-aged man suspected to be mentally unstable in Oke-Ala community, Oba-Ile, Akure North Local Government Area, Ondo State.
The officers were deployed to the scene following a complaint about a public disturbance caused by the suspect. Sources said the man had a history of mental instability and had been causing unrest in the area for years.
According to local sources, the situation escalated when the NSCDC personnel attempted to restrain the suspect. During the struggle, he allegedly overpowered one officer and stabbed him multiple times, despite the officers being armed.
“The boy has been acting strangely and suddenly became violent, disturbing the entire area. During the struggle, he took his knife and stabbed the officer several times,” a source stated.
The injured officer was rushed to a hospital but later succumbed to his injuries.
Confirming the incident, the NSCDC Public Relations Officer in Ondo State, Daniel Aidamenbor, said the officers were attempting to escort the suspect to a psychiatric hospital for proper treatment. He emphasized that the attack occurred while ensuring the safety of both the suspect and the community.
“It is true. The incident happened when our officers were trying to take the man to a facility where he would receive treatment,” Aidamenbor said.
