Colts Quarterback Anthony Richardson Suffers Freak Elastic Band Injury, Placed on Injured Reserve

Anthony Richardson, the backup quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts, is currently recovering after sustaining a bizarre pregame injury involving an elastic band. The incident occurred on Sunday, October 12, ahead of the Colts’ matchup against the Arizona Cardinals at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Freak Accident in Locker Room

The 23-year-old quarterback suffered an orbital fracture when an apparatus used to attach pregame warmup bands malfunctioned, according to ESPN. The injury happened in the locker room and immediately ruled Richardson out of the game. Colts head coach Shane Steichen confirmed that Richardson was transported to the hospital for treatment shortly after the accident.

Colts’ Performance Without Richardson

Despite Richardson’s unexpected absence, the Colts managed a narrow 31-27 victory over the Cardinals. Starting quarterback Daniel Jones threw two touchdown passes and ran for another, pushing Indianapolis to a 5-1 record for the season. After the game, Jones described Richardson’s injury as a “freak situation,” emphasizing the unusual nature of the incident.

Teammates Show Support

Backup quarterback Riley Leonard, who moved up the depth chart in Richardson’s absence, admitted that his first concern was for his teammate’s well-being.

“My first thought was, ‘Is Anthony okay?’ From the day I walked into the building, he’s always been there for me. That’s my friend, so that’s all that matters,” Leonard said.

The team’s camaraderie highlights the close-knit nature of the Colts’ locker room, even amidst unforeseen challenges.

Richardson’s NFL Journey

Anthony Richardson was selected fourth overall by the Colts in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft. The former Florida Gators star quickly made a name for himself with his athleticism and dual-threat quarterbacking ability. Unfortunately, the injury has led to Richardson being placed on injured reserve, and he is expected to miss at least the next four games.

Looking Ahead for the Colts

While Richardson focuses on recovery, the Colts will rely on their current roster depth to maintain momentum this season. Injuries are a common hurdle in the NFL, but the Colts appear prepared to adapt, thanks to the leadership of Daniel Jones and the support of their backup quarterbacks.
