A tragic incident unfolded in Nizamabad town, Telangana, on Friday evening when a police constable was fatally stabbed by a theft accused while being taken to the police station. The 42-year-old constable, E Pramod, was serving at the Central Crime Station (CCS) in Nizamabad.

According to Nizamabad town Inspector of Police G Srinivas Raju, Pramod had gone to Hashmi Colony along with his nephew to apprehend Sheikh Riyaz (24), who was accused of stealing a two-wheeler. While returning to the station, Pramod made Riyaz sit in the middle of the pillion on his motorcycle, with his nephew sitting behind him.

“Near Vinayaknagar, Riyaz allegedly attacked Constable Pramod with a knife, stabbing him in the chest,” the inspector said. Pramod’s nephew tried to intervene but was also attacked, sustaining injuries to his hands. During the altercation, two unidentified men on a motorcycle arrived to assist Riyaz, helping him escape the scene.

Sub-inspector S Vitthal, who was following them, rushed to the location and shifted the injured constable to Nizamabad Government General Hospital (GGH). However, Pramod was declared dead on arrival. His nephew’s condition is reported to be stable.

Pramod, survived by his wife and three children, was described by colleagues as a “sincere and duty-minded constable.” Authorities have urged citizens to provide any information that may lead to the capture of Riyaz and his accomplices, as security has been heightened across Nizamabad district.

Taking swift action, Telangana Director General of Police (DGP) B Shivadhar Reddy directed Nizamabad Police Commissioner P Sai Chaitanya to constitute teams to trace and arrest the accused. Additionally, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Multi Zone–I, S Chandrashekhar Reddy, was asked to visit Nizamabad and closely monitor the situation.

In an official statement, the DGP expressed deep sorrow over the “brutal murder” of the constable and assured that all possible assistance would be extended to his family. “The investigation is being pursued with top priority, and strict action will be taken against those responsible,” the statement added.

The incident has shaken the local police community and residents, highlighting the dangers law enforcement personnel face while performing their duties. Authorities continue their search for Riyaz and his accomplices, vowing swift justice for the slain officer.
