Court Resumes Hearing in Case Involving Anthony Joshua’s Driver

A Magistrate Court sitting in Sagamu, Ogun State, has resumed proceedings in the case involving Adeniyi Kayode, the driver of a Lexus SUV linked to a fatal road accident that claimed the lives of two close associates of heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua.

Kayode, 46, was first arraigned before the Sagamu Magistrate Court on January 2, with Magistrate Olufunilayo Somefun presiding over the matter.

He is facing a four-count charge bordering on dangerous driving causing death, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care and attention resulting in bodily injury and property damage, as well as driving without a valid national driver’s licence. The offences are said to contravene relevant provisions of the Federal Highway Act, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, as applicable in Ogun State.

The court had earlier granted the defendant bail in the sum of ₦5 million, with two sureties required.

The case arose from a tragic accident that occurred on December 29, 2025, along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. Reports indicate that the Lexus SUV collided with a stationary truck, resulting in the deaths of Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami.

Both men were close members of Anthony Joshua’s team. Ghami served as the boxer’s strength and conditioning coach, while Ayodele was his personal trainer and long-time confidant.

Joshua and the driver reportedly sustained minor injuries in the crash. The former world heavyweight champion was later discharged from hospital after being declared medically stable to continue recovery at home.

In the aftermath of the incident, Joshua, accompanied by his mother, visited a Lagos funeral home to pay his last respects, as arrangements were made to repatriate the bodies of the deceased to the United Kingdom.

Funeral prayers for Ayodele and Ghami were held on January 4, 2026, at the London Central Mosque, after which they were laid to rest at Hendon Cemetery.

Their deaths triggered an outpouring of tributes from the global boxing community, reflecting their significant roles in Joshua’s career and the sport at large.
