Deadly Taiwan Knife and Grenade Attack Planned for Over a Year, Police Say

Taiwanese authorities revealed on Monday that the suspect behind a deadly knife and grenade attack in Taipei meticulously planned the assault for more than a year. The attack left three people dead and 11 others wounded, shocking the nation where violent crime is relatively rare.

Details of the Attack

The suspect, 27-year-old Chang Wen, carried out the assault on Friday at a Taipei metro station and surrounding streets before fleeing into a department store. Chang indiscriminately stabbed passers-by and launched smoke grenades as part of his attack.

While being pursued by police, Chang fell from the fifth floor of the department store, resulting in his death at the scene.

Elaborate Planning and Execution

Taipei police Chief Li Hsi-Ho described Chang as “extremely cunning” due to the meticulous planning and execution of the multi-phase attack. Authorities stated that:

  • Chang prepared for the assault since April 2024, purchasing smoke grenades, gas canisters, respirators, and other tools.
  • During the attack, he changed clothing and modes of transportation, moving from a scooter to a bike to walking.
  • He set fire to his apartment, streets, and vehicles along his route, creating chaos and destruction.

Li noted that Chang’s motive for the crime also began a year and a half ago, though police continue to investigate the exact reasons behind the attack.

Suspect’s Background

Authorities provided further context on Chang’s personal history:

  • He had previously served voluntarily in the military but was dismissed due to drunken driving.
  • Chang had failed to report for mandatory military service in July 2025, making him a wanted person.
  • He had not been in contact with his family for more than two years, isolating him further from social support networks.

Victims and Response

Of the 11 injured, five remained hospitalized, with one patient in intensive care but in stable condition following surgery. The attack prompted Taipei authorities to increase security measures at crowded public spaces and large events across the city.

Broader Implications

The incident has raised concerns about public safety in urban centers in Taiwan, highlighting the need for vigilance and emergency preparedness. Authorities continue to investigate the motive and background of the suspect while reviewing potential measures to prevent similar attacks in the future.
