With the New Year weekend approaching, Dehradun is bracing for a significant influx of tourists traveling to the popular hill station of Mussoorie. To ensure smooth traffic movement, prevent congestion, and maintain public safety, the Dehradun Police have released a comprehensive traffic plan and advisory for vehicles heading to and from Mussoorie via Dehradun city.
Dehradun SSP Ajai Singh stated that the plan has been designed keeping in mind the anticipated surge in tourist vehicles and includes designated travel routes, diversion strategies, and ample parking arrangements both in Mussoorie and in Dehradun.
Designated Routes for Tourists
From Delhi, Roorkee, and Saharanpur via Mohand:
Tourists traveling from these locations are advised to take the route: Mohand → Asharodi → ISBT → Shimla Bypass → Saint Jude’s Chowk → Ballupur Chowk → Garhi Cantt T-junction → Anarwala T-junction → Johri Gaon → Mussoorie Road → Kuthal Gate to reach Mussoorie.
From Delhi via Haridwar-Rishikesh and Jogiwala:
Vehicles on this route should follow: Haridwar/Rishikesh → Harrawala → Mohkampur Flyover → Jogiwala → U-turn near Kailash Hospital → Culvert No. 06 → Ring Road → Ladpur T-junction → Sahastradhara Crossing → IT Park → Kirshali Chowk → Sai Mandir T-junction → Mussoorie Diversion → Kuthal Gate.
Alternative Route in Case of Dehradun City Congestion:
If congestion occurs within the city, an alternative route has been identified from Haridwar via Nepali Farm T-junction → Bhaniyawala → Airport T-junction → Thano Road → Maharana Pratap Chowk → Ladpur T-junction → Sahastradhara Crossing → IT Park → Kirshali Chowk → Sai Mandir T-junction → Mussoorie Diversion → Kuthal Gate.
Return Route from Mussoorie
Vehicles returning from Mussoorie towards Delhi, Saharanpur, Roorkee, Rishikesh, Haridwar, and Vikasnagar will be directed along the route: Kuthal Gate → Old Rajpur Road → Rajpur → Sai Mandir → Kirshali Chowk → IT Park → Tapovan Bypass Road → Nalapani Chowk → Tapovan Gate → Ladpur T-junction → Culvert No. 06, from where travelers can continue toward Jogiwala, Rishikesh, Haridwar, or ISBT.
Parking Arrangements in Mussoorie
To manage the heavy influx of tourist vehicles, police have identified several parking locations in and around Mussoorie:
- Picture Palace: 70 cars
- Landour Road: 60 cars
- Kempty Taxi Stand: 250 cars and 20 buses
- Below Town Hall: 70 cars and 100 two-wheelers
- King Craig: 216 cars
- Hotels in Mussoorie: 1,800 cars
- Company Garden Road: 30 cars
- Masonic Lodge/Picture Palace Taxi Stand: 15 cars
- Vikas Hotel parking in Kulri: 20 cars
- Roadside parking at Gajji Band: 500 cars
The traffic management plan in Mussoorie will operate in phases:
- Plan A: Normal traffic operation from King Craig toward Library and Picture Palace.
- Plan B: Activated when 70% of parking capacity is used; tourists will be parked at King Craig and ferried via local taxis or shuttle services.
- Plan C: Enforced if King Craig parking is full; tourists will be transported from Gajji Band to their destinations using taxis.
Traffic Management within Dehradun City
To avoid bottlenecks in Dehradun, police have planned diversions at key congestion points:
- Vehicles from Mussoorie toward Ghanta Ghar will be diverted from Sai Mandir T-junction via IT Park if traffic builds up on Pacific Mall or Rajpur Road.
- Traffic from CSD T-junction near Raj Bhavan heading toward Dilaram Chowk will be rerouted via Johri Gaon.
- In the event of congestion at Clock Tower, diversions will be implemented from Orient Chowk, Buddha Chowk, or Tehsil Chowk as required.
Parking Facilities in Dehradun
To further manage the expected surge, designated parking spaces have been allocated throughout Dehradun city:
- Rangers Ground near Buddha Chowk: 300 cars
- Parade Ground near Tibetan Market: 100 cars
- Old Roadways Bus Stand near Tehsil Chowk: 80 cars
- Kabul House near Survey Chowk: 60 cars
- Kanak Chowk multilevel parking: 70 cars
- MDDA parking near Clock Tower: 300 cars
- Rajiv Gandhi Complex near Tehsil Chowk: 400 cars
Advisory for Tourists and Residents
The police have appealed to all tourists and residents to strictly follow the traffic advisories, cooperate with on-duty personnel, and utilize the designated parking facilities. The aim is to ensure smooth, safe, and hassle-free travel during the busy New Year weekend.
SSP Ajai Singh emphasized that adherence to the traffic plan will help prevent unnecessary congestion, maintain orderly vehicle movement, and enhance the overall tourist experience in both Dehradun and Mussoorie. Travelers are urged to plan their trips in advance, maintain patience during peak hours, and stay alert to instructions from traffic personnel.
By implementing these measures, the Dehradun Police hope to manage the holiday traffic efficiently, ensuring that the city and the popular hill station of Mussoorie remain safe and accessible for all visitors during this festive period.
