Delhi Crime Trends 2024: Burglary Surges, Murder Stable, Attempt to Murder Rises

New Delhi: Burglary cases in the national capital rose sharply in 2024, emerging as the most prominent crime trend, while attempts to murder also saw a notable increase, according to the Delhi Statistical Handbook 2025. Meanwhile, murder figures remained largely stable.

Delhi recorded 8,965 burglary cases in 2024, up from 6,916 in 2023, marking a 29.6% increase in a single year. The surge reflects a continuing upward trend: 6,189 cases were reported in 2022 and just 2,637 in 2021, indicating a 135% jump between 2021 and 2022, followed by incremental rises in subsequent years.

Attempted murder cases also rose significantly. The city reported 898 such cases in 2024, compared to 757 in 2023, an increase of about 18.6% year-on-year. Earlier, 785 cases were recorded in 2022 and 761 in 2021.

In contrast, murder cases remained stable, with 504 cases in 2024, slightly down from 506 in 2023, representing a marginal 0.4% decline. Previous years saw 509 cases in 2022 and 459 in 2021.

A senior Delhi Police officer said that, in response to rising crimes, area domination and night patrolling have been intensified, with special pickets, mobile patrols, and increased foot patrols at vulnerable locations helping to manage and control incidents effectively.

The data underscores a growing focus on property crimes and violent attempts, even as homicides remain relatively steady in the capital.
