The sons of the late Diogo Jota will take part as matchday mascots when Liverpool host Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield on Saturday, marking a poignant occasion in memory of the Portuguese forward.
Jota’s children, Dinis and Duarte, two of his three sons, will accompany the mascots onto the pitch before kick-off, a gesture designed to honor their father and his connection to both clubs.
Remembering Diogo Jota
Diogo Jota, 28, tragically passed away in a car crash in Spain in July, alongside his 25-year-old brother Andre Silva. The Premier League forward had established himself as a star for both Wolves and Liverpool, leaving a lasting legacy at both clubs.
Jota joined Liverpool in 2020 after three successful seasons with Wolves, where he made a major impact as a forward. In his career at Liverpool, he scored 65 goals in 182 appearances, helping the Reds secure the FA Cup, League Cup in 2022, and the Premier League title last season.
At Wolves, he initially arrived on a season-long loan from Atlético Madrid in 2017, eventually scoring 44 goals in 131 appearances, becoming a fan favorite and a key player for the Midlands club.
A Touching Gesture for the Family
Liverpool manager Arne Slot, in his programme notes for the fixture, reflected on the emotions surrounding the upcoming game and expressed hope that the affection for Jota could offer comfort to his family during their first Christmas without him.
“Reflecting on everything that has happened over the last 12 months ignites a rollercoaster of emotions, but it is normal at this time of year to look back on everything that has happened,” Slot said.
“Doing so leads me to think especially of the family of Diogo Jota on what will be their first Christmas without him. It is not my place to tell them where they should look for comfort – if that is even possible – but I can only hope that the feeling of love and affection that Diogo still generates brings them some solace.”
This gesture will ensure Jota’s memory remains present at Anfield, honoring both his career achievements and the enduring bond he shared with fans of Liverpool and Wolves.
