DisCos Install 70,888 New Meters in August 2025, Reports NERC

Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) in Nigeria installed 70,888 new electricity meters in August 2025, according to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

This information was disclosed in NERC’s Metering Factsheet for July and August 2025, which highlights ongoing efforts to close the country’s metering gap and improve transparency in electricity billing.

Marginal Growth in Active Electricity Customers

The factsheet revealed that the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) saw a slight increase in active electricity customers, rising from 11.89 million meters in July to 11.96 million meters in August 2025.

Out of this total, 6.58 million customers were fully metered, representing a metering rate of 55.01%, up from 54.71% in July.

“These numbers highlight gradual progress in addressing Nigeria’s metering gap and improving billing accuracy for electricity consumers,” NERC said.

Top Performing DisCos

The highest-performing DisCos, according to the NERC report, were:

  • Ikeja Electric: 84.83% metering rate
  • Eko Electric: 84.25% metering rate
  • Abuja Electricity Distribution Company: 73.92% metering rate

These companies continue to lead the way in improving customer metering coverage and service reliability.

Funding to Accelerate Metering

NERC recently approved N28 billion for DisCos to procure and install meters for unmetered Band ‘A’ and Band ‘B’ customers within their respective franchise areas.

The Commission explained that the funds will be allocated based on each DisCo’s contribution and are intended to:

  • Meter all remaining unmetered Band A customers
  • Accelerate closure of the metering gap for Tariff Band B customers

Due to challenges in securing financing for meter acquisition and other critical capital investments, NERC created the Meter Acquisition Fund (MAF) to ensure continuous progress in customer metering.

Moving Forward

The installation of 70,888 new meters in August 2025 reflects a steady effort by DisCos to modernize Nigeria’s electricity distribution system, reduce billing disputes, and improve service delivery to consumers nationwide.
