DMK MP Dayanidhi Maran’s recent comments contrasting Tamil Nadu’s social development with the conditions in northern states have ignited a political controversy, with the BJP accusing the Dravidian party of fostering divisiveness between the regions. The remarks, made during an event where the DMK government distributed free laptops to college students, were widely interpreted as a pointed critique of the socio-cultural and linguistic policies in northern India.
Speaking at the distribution event held at Quaid-E-Millath Government College for Women in Chennai, Maran praised Tamil Nadu’s initiatives aimed at women’s empowerment and education. He argued that the state’s emphasis on equipping youth with skills and education had attracted global companies to establish bases in Tamil Nadu, creating employment opportunities and fostering economic growth. Maran said, “Our government’s schemes ensure social justice and equal development for girls and women. The laptops distributed today are used by beneficiaries to study and enhance their future prospects. This is what we are proud of.”
In contrast, Maran made pointed remarks about northern states, suggesting that their social and educational priorities limited opportunities for women and youth. According to him, in many northern states, women are encouraged to remain confined to household roles, focusing on childbearing and domestic work rather than professional development. He further criticised the educational focus in these regions, alleging that Hindi is prioritised over English, restricting students’ exposure to global opportunities and contributing to higher unemployment rates. He added that this has driven many young people from northern states to migrate to Tamil Nadu in search of better prospects.
Maran’s comments quickly drew criticism from opposition parties. BJP Mahila Morcha national president Vanathi Srinivasan accused the DMK of promoting a north-south divide, stating that Maran had targeted North Indians before and that this approach was reflective of the party’s core ideology. She remarked, “DMK is always trying to divide north and south. Such statements create unnecessary regional tension.”
BJP Tamil Nadu spokesperson Narayanan Thirupathy echoed these concerns, highlighting that many youth from Maran’s own district in Tamil Nadu had migrated abroad due to limited local employment opportunities. He said, “How can they target and abuse people from North India? This is completely wrong. You can claim your achievements. There is nothing wrong with that, but you cannot demean others.”
