Domestic Violence: Man Arrested in Sokoto Following Wife’s Killing in Kebbi

Sule Gurmu, a man accused of murdering his wife, Umaima Maidawa, has been apprehended in Katami town, Silame Local Government Area of Sokoto State. The arrest followed a coordinated operation by law enforcement agencies.

The alleged killing occurred in Bayawa town, Augie Local Government Area of Kebbi State, sparking widespread shock and mourning among residents. Reports indicate the incident stemmed from domestic violence, highlighting growing concerns about such cases in northwest Nigerian communities.

In response, the Chairman of Augie Local Government Area, Hon. Yahaya Muhammad Augie, directed security agencies to swiftly locate and apprehend the suspect. Acting on these instructions, a joint team of the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) conducted an intensive cross-state investigation.

The operation successfully led to Gurmu’s arrest in Katami town, Sokoto State, without any incident. Following confirmation of the murder, Hon. Augie visited Bayawa town with security operatives to assess the situation and provide reassurance to the grieving community.

The deceased’s body was evacuated to Argungu General Hospital, where an autopsy was performed as part of the ongoing investigation. Hon. Augie condemned the killing as “inhumane, criminal, and unacceptable,” emphasizing that domestic violence has no place in a law-abiding society.

He assured that his administration will not tolerate acts of violence within homes or communities and that perpetrators will face the full weight of the law. Hon. Augie also praised the police and NSCDC for their swift response and inter-agency collaboration, which led to the timely arrest of the suspect.

Extending condolences to the family of the deceased, he urged them to remain strong as justice proceeds through legal channels. He reaffirmed Augie Local Government Area’s commitment to protecting lives and property and promised decisive action against crime and domestic violence in all forms.
