Drone Attack Disrupts Power at Khor Mor Gasfield in Northern Iraq

Northern Iraq – A drone attack on the Khor Mor gasfield in Iraq’s semi-autonomous Kurdish region forced the facility to suspend operations late Wednesday night, resulting in widespread power disruptions affecting much of northern Iraq.

According to local and international media reports, the attack occurred at around 11:30 pm local time (20:30 GMT) on November 26, 2025, targeting multiple gas storage tanks at the facility. The explosion sparked a large fire, prompting emergency response teams to intervene. Several workers were injured, though no fatalities have been reported so far.

The Joint Operations Command of Iraq described the attack as an attempt to disrupt “security and economic stability” in the Kurdish region.

Impact on Power Supply

The Khor Mor gasfield supplies energy to the Kurdish region of northern Iraq, and local officials reported that about 8 percent of the regional power grid was affected, leading to rolling power cuts across the semi-autonomous region. Field engineers expect repairs to the gas storage tanks to take two to three days, AFP reported.

About Khor Mor Gasfield

The gasfield, situated between Kirkuk and Sulaimaniyah, is operated by Dana Gas, a United Arab Emirates-based company. It is a critical energy infrastructure facility supplying electricity and gas across northern Iraq.

This is not the first time Khor Mor has been targeted. Earlier this week, security forces prevented a drone attack on the facility, and in 2024, a drone strike at the site killed four workers.

Investigation and Security Measures

Government officials and Dana Gas have deployed investigative teams to assess the damage and enhance security measures. While no group has claimed responsibility, drone attacks on Iraq’s gasfields have been a recurring concern for local authorities and regional security agencies.

“The priority is to restore power to the affected areas and ensure the safety of workers,” a Dana Gas spokesperson said.

Regional Implications

The attack underscores the vulnerability of energy infrastructure in conflict-prone regions and highlights ongoing security challenges in the Kurdish-controlled areas of northern Iraq. Analysts warn that repeated attacks on strategic facilities could have long-term economic and security consequences for the region.
