The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has suspended Guinea-Bissau from all decision-making bodies following a military takeover on 26 November 2025, three days after the country’s contentious elections.
The suspension, announced after an emergency virtual session of the ECOWAS Mediation and Security Council (MSC), will remain until full constitutional order is restored. ECOWAS condemned the detention of President Umaro Sissoco Embaló and other officials, rejected any attempt to legitimize the coup, and called for the immediate release of all detained political actors.
Despite this, coup leaders have named Army Chief General Horta N’Tam as transitional head of state for one year.
