Eddie Howe ‘Very Happy’ at Newcastle Amid Manchester United Links

Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe has dismissed speculation linking him with the Manchester United managerial job, insisting he is “very happy” at St James’ Park.

Since taking charge of Newcastle in November 2021, Howe has become one of the longest-serving managers in the Premier League, behind only Pep Guardiola, Mikel Arteta, and Marco Silva in terms of tenure.

“No. Not at this current time,” Howe said when asked if anything could tempt him away from Newcastle. “The most important thing for me is happiness in the role, happiness in the job, the relationships that I have with the people around me. That has not always been consistently good. Things can change at any football club, but I’m very happy at the moment.”

Stability and Support at Newcastle

Despite earlier tensions with former sporting director Paul Mitchell, who left the club last summer, Howe has quickly built a strong working relationship with his replacement, Ross Wilson.

He has also navigated changes at the executive level, working with David Hopkinson following Darren Eales’ departure due to ill health. Howe highlighted the importance of unity between the board, staff, and himself for long-term success:

“For any club to be successful, there has to be unity from top to bottom. There has to be a good feeling between everyone. I’ve had an unbelievable relationship with the board. That’s never changed. I consider myself very lucky to have that because there are very few managers that have the time to build those relationships.”

Newcastle’s Strong Season

Under Howe, Newcastle have enjoyed a solid campaign across competitions:

  • 9th in the Premier League, just two points off fifth place.
  • Carabao Cup semi-finalists, defending the trophy they won last season, ending a 70-year domestic silverware drought.
  • On course for a Champions League last-16 play-off spot.

Howe emphasized the value of being able to express himself fully in his role, saying this has been key to his contentment and ongoing success at the club.

“To have the confidence and trust within each other is really important. Hopefully that stays for a long time,” he added.

With the backing of Newcastle’s majority owners, the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia, and minority shareholder Jamie Reuben, Howe appears settled and focused on maintaining Newcastle’s upward trajectory.
