The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has launched an investigation into a viral video showing a man spraying bundles of naira notes inside a church in Warri, Delta State.
EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale confirmed that the commission was reviewing the footage, stating, “The matter is under investigation,” according to PUNCH.
The video, which has sparked widespread outrage on social media, shows the man showering various denominations, including N200, N50, and N20 notes, onto a dark-coloured cow brought into the church during a thanksgiving ceremony. A woman beside him held a large pile of cash while he continued spraying.
The scene reportedly resembled a social party, with hip-hop music blasting as the pastor sang in Urhobo. A hype man repeatedly hailed the man as a “young billionaire,” urging congregants to recognise him as he threw money amid loud cheers.
The footage has drawn sharp criticism online. Users described it as offensive, disgraceful, and even likened it to “Baal worship.” Some suggested the perpetrators might be criminals, while others condemned the church leadership for allowing such acts in a place of worship.
Attempts to reach the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edefa, for comment were unsuccessful.
Spraying money at social and religious events has been a persistent issue in Nigeria, often seen as a display of wealth but illegal under Section 21 of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, which prohibits tampering with the nation’s currency.
The EFCC has intensified its crackdown on currency abuse, noting that such practices undermine the naira’s dignity, encourage illicit financial activity, and disrupt economic order. Several arrests and convictions have been secured in recent years as part of these enforcement efforts.
