A tragic road accident on Ikorodu Road, Lagos, on Sunday claimed the lives of an eight-month-old baby and an adult female, leaving ten other passengers injured.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the incident, which occurred opposite Olabode House, between Anthony and Obanikoro. According to the agency’s statement, a red Tata commercial bus traveling at high speed from Palmgroove toward Anthony lost control, crossed the median, and collided with a Volkswagen commercial bus traveling in the opposite direction.
The violent crash resulted in the immediate death of the adult female passenger, while the eight-month-old infant succumbed to injuries sustained in the collision. LASTMA described the loss as “heartbreaking,” plunging the local community into mourning.
In response, LASTMA operatives, with assistance from members of the public, conducted a coordinated rescue operation, extricating ten passengers from the wreckage, including the drivers of both vehicles. Six passengers were rescued from the Volkswagen bus and four from the red Tata bus, all with varying degrees of injuries.
The Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) transported the injured to nearby medical facilities, while the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) recovered and evacuated the bodies of the deceased. Security support was provided by the Ilupeju Police Division.
LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki offered condolences to the families of the deceased and prayed for the recovery of the injured. He also cautioned motorists, especially commercial drivers, to observe speed limits, ensure vehicles are roadworthy—particularly braking systems—and exercise restraint to prevent similar tragedies.
“The non-negotiable necessity of routine vehicle roadworthiness assessments cannot be overstated,” Bakare-Oki said, warning that reckless driving remains a deadly menace with devastating consequences.
