The Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) has announced a reduction in electricity supply across seven feeders within its franchise, resulting in some customers being downgraded from Band A to Band E under the Service-Based Tariff (SBT) system, with supply cut to as low as four hours daily.
EKEDC confirmed the changes via its verified X (formerly Twitter) account, stating that areas previously guaranteed 20 hours of electricity per day (Band A) will now receive lower supply bands. The SBT, introduced by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) in 2020, classifies customers into five bands based on daily supply:
- Band A: Minimum 20 hours
- Band B: Minimum 16 hours
- Band C: Minimum 12 hours
- Band D: Minimum 8 hours
- Band E: Minimum 4 hours
Affected feeders include Palace Road (Lagos Island) and Army Resettlement (Mushin), both downgraded from Band A to Band E. Other areas such as Badore (Ajah), Beecham (Agbara), Chevy View (Lekki), New Yaba (Akoka), Old Niger (Ajele District), and NAFDAC (Isolo) were downgraded from Band A to Band C.
EKEDC listed the downgrades as follows:
- Badore (Ajah): Band A → Band C
- Palace Road (Island): Band A → Band E
- Beecham (Agbara): Band A → Band C
- Chevy View (Lekki): Band A → Band C
- New Yaba (Akoka, Ijora District): Band A → Band C
- Old Niger (Ajele District): Band A → Band C
- NAFDAC (Isolo, Mushin District): Band A → Band C
- Army Resettlement (Mushin District): Band A → Band E
Attempts to reach EKEDC’s General Manager, Corporate Communications, Babatunde Lasaki, for clarification were unsuccessful.
This move underscores the utility company’s reliance on the SBT system to align tariffs with the quality of electricity service delivered.
