England rugby legend Emily Scarratt has announced her retirement from international rugby, choosing to step away from the game after a remarkable 17-year Test career and a triumphant second Rugby World Cup victory. At 35, Scarratt described her decision as “the perfect time to call it a night,” emphasizing her desire to leave on her own terms.
A Career of Records and Achievements
Scarratt made her England debut in 2008, coming off the bench to score a try against the United States at just 18 years old. Since then, she has become one of the most decorated players in women’s rugby, scoring 754 points—an all-time record for the Red Roses—and earning World Player of the Year honors in 2019.
Her final international appearance also came against the United States, with a 20-minute cameo in the 2025 Rugby World Cup opener. Despite limited on-field action, her contribution off the pitch was vital to England’s success.
Role Beyond the Pitch
Throughout the tournament, Scarratt embraced a mentoring and supportive role, carrying water bottles, guiding younger players, and contributing to team morale. She highlighted that the strength of a team lies in every member, regardless of matchday involvement:
“It has always been quite important to me to be able to show the strength of a team is the entire team, no matter what role you have within that.”
Her presence was particularly felt in the Rugby World Cup final against Canada, where England triumphed in front of 81,885 fans at the Stadium of Light. Scarratt described the moment as “unbelievable,” reflecting on the emotion of winning at home and knowing it marked the conclusion of her international career.
Retirement on Her Own Terms
Scarratt admitted that stepping away was not easy, acknowledging mixed emotions:
“I have been overwhelmed, and probably a bit unsure about how I feel… The bit coming back at you is the bit I struggle with.”
Nonetheless, she expressed pride in her achievements and excitement for the next chapter of her life, highlighting that leaving after a World Cup win felt right.
Future Plans
Emily Scarratt will remain deeply involved in rugby through multiple avenues:
- Assistant Coach for Loughborough Lightning
- Television Pundit covering domestic and international rugby
- Podcast Presenter focusing on women’s rugby
- Collaborating with the Rugby Football Union (RFU) to develop young talent
She also commented humorously on the proposed R360 global series, noting that while some players may be tempted by financial incentives, she was not approached to participate.
Legacy in Women’s Rugby
Scarratt’s career exemplifies dedication, skill, and leadership in women’s rugby. With four World Cups under her belt, countless caps, and record-breaking points, she leaves behind a legacy that will inspire future generations. Her transition to coaching, media, and player development ensures that her influence on the sport will continue long after her retirement from playing.
