Enugu Electricity Firm Denies Plotting Power Outages Amid Imo Government Accusations

The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) has rejected allegations by the Imo State Government that it is plotting a major power outage to undermine the state’s Light Up Imo electricity project.

The Imo government, through Commissioner for Information, Declan Emelumba, claimed it had “credible intelligence” that EEDC intended to sabotage the state-owned Orashi Electricity Company, which is being developed to provide stable and affordable power.

EEDC, in a statement signed by Emeka Ezeh, Group Head of Corporate Communications, dismissed the accusations as “baseless, unfounded, and completely devoid of truth,” urging electricity consumers and the public to disregard the claims.

“It is unfortunate that the Imo State Government has chosen the path of propaganda to divert public attention and mask its longstanding hostility toward EEDC and its operations within the state,” EEDC said.

The company further accused the state government of using “state machinery” to obstruct licensed electricity distributors, warning that any future service disruptions should be attributed to state actions. EEDC cited a recent incident on November 15, 2025, when armed policemen allegedly ordered the shutdown of the Egbu Transmission Station, leaving customers without power.

“What greater act of sabotage could there be?” the company asked.

EEDC reiterated two key points:

  1. There is no plan by EEDC to cause major outages in Imo State.
  2. The company remains committed to improving electricity supply reliability and continues to invest in service quality.

EEDC stressed its dedication to ensuring sustainable and improved power distribution to customers in Imo State, affirming that it will continue working toward better electricity service in the region.
