The United States Department of Justice has released thousands of additional documents connected to the late financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, revealing photographs and references to numerous high-profile figures. However, the latest document drop has sparked renewed controversy due to extensive redactions and the unexplained removal of several files shortly after publication.
The release follows the passage of the Epstein Files Transparency Act, signed into law in November 2025, which legally required the Justice Department to unseal all remaining unclassified records linked to Epstein and his longtime associate Ghislaine Maxwell. Maxwell is currently serving a 20-year federal prison sentence for her role in Epstein’s sex trafficking operation.
What Is New in the Latest Epstein Files Release?
This document dump is the second major tranche of Epstein-related material released by the DOJ, following the publication of approximately 950 pages of court records in early 2024. The newest release includes:
- Grand jury transcripts
- FBI interview summaries
- Internal DOJ records
- Seized photographs from Epstein’s properties
- Previously undisclosed evidence showing early warnings to authorities
One newly confirmed document shows that the FBI received a complaint as early as 1996 from Epstein survivor Maria Farmer, nearly a decade before Epstein’s first arrest. Farmer alleged that Epstein was abusing minors, but no meaningful investigation followed at the time.
Following the release, Farmer said she felt “redeemed,” while also expressing sorrow for other victims whose reports were allegedly ignored.
What Do the Newly Released Photos Show?
Among the most scrutinised materials are photographs seized by the FBI from Epstein’s homes in New York City and the US Virgin Islands. Many images are heavily redacted, with faces obscured and contextual details removed.
Despite this, several well-known public figures are clearly identifiable, including:
- Former US President Bill Clinton
- Music icons Mick Jagger, Michael Jackson, and Diana Ross
- Actor Kevin Spacey
- Comedian Chris Tucker
- Billionaire Richard Branson
- Former UK diplomat Peter Mandelson
- Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor (formerly Prince Andrew) and Sarah Ferguson
The DOJ has not provided explanations for the context of these photographs, nor has it alleged wrongdoing against many of the individuals shown.
Bill Clinton’s Presence in the Epstein Files
Former President Bill Clinton appears in several of the released images, including photos of him with Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell in social settings such as swimming pools and hot tubs.
Clinton has not been accused of criminal wrongdoing in connection with Epstein. His spokesperson strongly rejected implications raised by the release, calling the disclosure politically motivated and misleading. Clinton has previously stated that he cut ties with Epstein before Epstein’s 2008 conviction in Florida.
Does Donald Trump Appear in the Epstein Files?
Donald Trump appears only minimally in the newly released material. The few photos featuring him had already circulated publicly for years.
One court filing references an allegation that Epstein brought a 14-year-old girl to Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort and introduced her to Trump. The plaintiff in that case did not accuse Trump of abuse, and no charges or findings resulted.
The White House responded by stating that the Trump administration has been the “most transparent in history” and has called for broader investigations into Epstein’s associates.
Why Did Some Epstein Files Disappear After Release?
Shortly after publication, at least 16 files reportedly vanished from the DOJ’s Epstein files webpage, according to the Associated Press.
One removed image—originally labelled File 468—contained a photograph of Trump alongside Epstein, Melania Trump, and Ghislaine Maxwell. Other missing files included images of artwork and photographs stored in drawers and cabinets.
The DOJ has not issued a detailed explanation, stating only that materials are being reviewed and redacted “in an abundance of caution.”
Why Are So Many Epstein Documents Redacted?
Out of thousands of pages released, hundreds are fully blacked out, including entire grand jury transcripts.
Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche explained that redactions were legally required to protect:
- Victim identities
- Sensitive investigative material
- Classified national security information
- Ongoing legal proceedings
- Attorney-client and deliberative privileges
Campaigners behind the Transparency Act have criticised the scale of redactions, arguing they undermine the law’s intent.
When Will the Remaining Epstein Files Be Released?
The Justice Department has said additional releases are expected in the coming days, despite missing its original 30-day deadline mandated by law.
Both Democratic and Republican lawmakers have criticised the DOJ’s compliance, with some accusing the administration of violating federal law. Legal options under consideration include:
- Court action to compel disclosure
- Congressional subpoenas
- Contempt-of-Congress proceedings
Why the Epstein Files Still Matter
The Epstein case remains one of the most significant failures of elite accountability in modern US history. The ongoing dispute over transparency highlights unresolved questions about how Epstein evaded prosecution for decades and who may have enabled or ignored his crimes.
As further documents are expected, public and political pressure continues to grow for full disclosure without selective redaction.
