Experts Advocate Human-Centred Approaches to Technology at Rehumanising Communication Summit

As automation, artificial intelligence (AI), and digital systems continue to reshape society, experts are urging a human-centred approach to technology, business, and education.

The call came during the Rehumanising Communication Summit, held virtually and convened by Mololuwa Rachael Olabode and Oreoluwa Adigun in collaboration with the School of Media and Communication, Pan-Atlantic University. The summit gathered professionals from academia, technology, and business to explore how empathy, trust, and human connection can be preserved in an increasingly automated world.

Distinguished panelists included Dr. Soji Cole, Professor of Black Literature and Creative Writing at Saint Mary’s University, Nova Scotia; Mr. Yemi Adedoyin, Business Operations Team Lead at Phase 3 Telecom; and Mrs. Taofikat Morayo Nwabufo, Founder of Wọlé Technologies.

Moderated by Mololuwa, the discussion centered on the question: How do we keep the human touch in an automated world?

Dr. Cole stressed the importance of patience and intentionality in interactions, calling for a “slow movement” to ensure people operate at their proper pace even amid digital efficiency. Mr. Adedoyin emphasized that “humans will always remain humans – innovation won’t change that,” while Mrs. Nwabufo reinforced that technology should serve humanity, not replace it.

The summit highlighted that rehumanising communication requires valuing inclusion, empathy, and cultural awareness, even as AI and automation reshape professional and social landscapes.

In her closing remarks, Mololuwa said, “This conversation goes beyond technology – it is about preserving the essence of human connection in every sphere where communication happens.”

The summit reaffirmed the role of the School of Media and Communication, Pan-Atlantic University, as a hub for thought leadership and research addressing evolving communication realities in Africa and beyond.
