The family of Saheed Ganiyu Ayinde, a 28-year-old commercial motorcyclist, has petitioned Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun, demanding justice following his alleged torture and death in police custody at the Ago-Iwoye Divisional Police Headquarters in Ogun State.
Through their lawyer, Olaniyi Oladuni, the family accused officers of extra-judicial killing, torture, extortion, and professional misconduct. They also submitted copies to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, calling for an urgent investigation.
According to the petition, Ayinde lived behind the police station and was arrested on September 27, 2025, along with his roommate, Ige Ojeyinka, after six men accused him of involvement in a robbery they had experienced earlier.
The family alleges that Inspector Yakub Adams handcuffed Ayinde, chained him, and subjected him to severe beatings with rods and cutlasses in a police cell. Ojeyinka, a witness, recounted hearing Ayinde cry, “This torture is unbearable, kill me”, before his body was found soaked in blood.
Eyewitnesses claim that despite Ayinde showing signs of distress, officers ignored pleas for help. Later, Ayinde’s bloodied body was allegedly taken to an unknown location, while Ojeyinka and other detainees were released without bail conditions.
The petition describes the officers’ actions as “a serious miscarriage of justice, abuse of power, and a flagrant violation of fundamental human rights.” It notes that Ayinde was falsely accused, with no incriminating evidence found on him at the time of arrest.
The family’s demands include:
- A full-scale investigation into Ayinde’s death.
- Protection for Ige Ojeyinka, the key witness.
- Production of Ayinde’s clothes from the cell.
- Disciplinary action against any officer found culpable.
The family stressed their commitment to legal recourse and warned that inaction could exacerbate tensions in the community.
“We pray for the intervention of your office to ensure justice is served and the perpetrators are held accountable,” the petition concluded.
