Former Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose has warned that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) could face political irrelevance if it fails to field former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections.
In an exclusive interview with Arise Television, Fayose described Obi as the key political figure capable of giving the ADC national relevance. He emphasized that other party members lack the ability to generate significant electoral traction.
“Peter Obi is the life of ADC. I’m not saying there are no other human beings in ADC, but others are largely spent forces,” Fayose said. “Obi is the only traction, the only meaning, the only factor, the only person in ADC that matters.”
Fayose highlighted Obi’s influence during the 2023 elections, noting that his candidacy under the Labour Party enabled the party to secure seats in the House of Representatives despite its previously limited national presence. He added that Obi’s appeal transcends party platforms and would attract similar support even if he contested under another party.
While not predicting whether Obi will win the 2027 presidential election, Fayose stressed that the ADC’s fortunes would decline if it fails to field him as its candidate.
“Even if they don’t field Obi, their case will be worse than their coming together,” he said, underscoring Obi’s central role in the party’s relevance and political prospects.
