Tension has gripped the Osun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) following recent remarks by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike concerning the party’s national leadership crisis, raising questions over Governor Ademola Adeleke’s 2026 re-election prospects.
Speaking on national television on Monday night, Wike was asked whether the PDP would field candidates in the 2026 Osun and Ekiti governorship elections. He responded by describing the party as being “in danger,” adding pointedly:
“Ask the governor of Osun, Adeleke. He came to see me, and I told him, what are you doing? You are in danger. I don’t like people who are not truthful… there is this spirit in governors that I can do it all, I can do magic.”
Wike’s comments have reportedly unsettled party leaders in Osun, sparking fears that the statement could affect Adeleke’s chances of securing the party’s proper nomination.
A PDP leader, Adewale Adegbite, expressed concern, saying:
“You can listen to the comment made by Wike. Are we not done for as a party for the 2026 governorship election? Our party is united and ready to face the election next year, but the latest development may affect our preparation.”
Another senior PDP official, who preferred to remain anonymous, noted that Adeleke has been engaging with various factions within the party, including consultations with Wike and Governor Seyi Makinde, in a bid to secure proper nomination.
However, the Osun PDP has sought to calm nerves. Its Director of Media, Oladele Olabamji, told The Nation yesterday:
“We don’t foresee any danger. Governor Adeleke has begun his nomination process, which we all know. The process will be completed without any issue, I can assure you.”
As the PDP navigates its internal divisions, all eyes will remain on how the party manages the nomination process ahead of the 2026 elections.
