Motunrayo Kuti, daughter of late Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo Kuti, has weighed in on the escalating online feud between her brother, Seun Kuti, and Nigerian music star Wizkid.
Her reaction followed Wizkid’s controversial claim that he is “bigger” than Fela Kuti—a remark that emerged during a heated social media exchange linked to the nickname “Big Bird.”
In a fiery video now circulating online, Motunrayo strongly condemned Wizkid’s statement, accusing the singer of disrespecting her father’s legacy and Nigeria’s cultural history. Her emotional response, delivered partly in Pidgin, included harsh personal remarks directed at Wizkid and his family.
The video quickly went viral, further intensifying the debate already raging across social media platforms. While some viewers applauded her for fiercely defending Fela’s legacy, others criticised her comments as excessive and unnecessarily personal.
How the Feud Began
The controversy reportedly started after Wizkid responded to Seun Kuti during an online exchange by stating, “I big pass your papa.” The comment instantly sparked outrage, with many interpreting it as a direct comparison between Wizkid’s commercial success and Fela Kuti’s historic influence.
The clash is also believed to be tied to branding tension surrounding Seun Kuti’s Instagram handle, “Big Bird Kuti,” which overlaps with Wizkid’s long-associated nickname, “Big Bird.”
Public Reactions Remain Divided
As expected, fans have taken sides. Supporters of Wizkid argue that his global success and influence justify his confidence, while critics maintain that Fela Kuti’s political, cultural, and musical impact remains unparalleled in Nigerian history.
With emotions still running high, the dispute continues to dominate conversations online, showing no immediate signs of resolution.
