New Delhi: A major fire broke out at the multi-storey Brahmaputra Apartments on Dr Bishambhar Das Marg in Delhi on Saturday, sending residents into panic and prompting an immediate response from the fire department.
The blaze erupted on one of the upper floors of the apartment complex, which houses several Rajya Sabha MPs and is located barely 200 meters from the Parliament. Multiple fire tenders rushed to the scene to bring the fire under control, though the cause of the fire remains unknown.
According to the Delhi Fire Service, a total of 14 vehicles, including TTL units, were dispatched to tackle the high-rise fire. An ADO from the department told ANI:
“At 1:22 PM, we received a call reporting a fire at Brahmaputra Apartments, located near Pandit Pant Marg. We immediately dispatched 14 vehicles, including TTL, as this is a high-rise building. So far, the damage is mostly on the stilt floor, and the upper floors are damaged externally. The fire has been brought under control, but our work is still ongoing. There is no casualty report yet.”
Residents’ distress
Several residents reported panic and losses due to the fire. A resident on the third floor told ANI that his wife and children sustained burn injuries and were undergoing treatment at a local hospital. He also expressed concern over personal belongings, including jewellery meant for his daughter’s upcoming wedding, which were inside the apartment at the time of the fire.
“My dog was stuck inside. My daughter is about to be married in a few months, and all the jewellery, gold, and clothes we had bought are also inside. My wife and one of my children also suffered burns. They are in the hospital. We have no clue how the fire started,” he said.
Trinamool Congress MP Saket Gokhale raised an alarm on social media, highlighting delays in fire response:
“HUGE FIRE at Brahmaputra Apartments at BD Marg in Delhi. All residents are Rajya Sabha MPs. The building is 200 meters from Parliament. NO FIRE BRIGADE SINCE 30 mins. The fire is still burning & RISING. Fire engines are missing despite repeated calls. Have some shame, Delhi Government.”
Background of the building
The Brahmaputra Apartments, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2020, are a high-profile residential complex for MPs in the national capital. The incident comes as a serious concern due to its proximity to the Parliament and the high density of residents.
Authorities are continuing operations to assess damages and determine the origin of the fire, while residents remain anxious about their safety and losses. No official casualty figures have been released so far, although some residents have reported injuries.
The fire has once again highlighted the vulnerability of high-rise residential complexes in Delhi and the importance of timely emergency response.
