The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has addressed recent claims that it appointed Xpress Payments as the sole channel for Treasury Single Account (TSA) collections, describing the allegations as misleading and a potential politicisation of administrative processes.
In a statement signed by Arabinrin Atoyebi, Technical Assistant to the FIRS Executive Chairman, the agency clarified that no exclusive or monopoly arrangement exists for government revenue collection. FIRS operates a multi-channel, competitive payment system that includes Quickteller, Remita, Etranzact, Flutterwave, and XpressPay.
The Service stressed that these Payment Solution Service Providers (PSSPs) do not act as collection agents, earn fees per payment, or have access to government funds. All revenue collected flows directly into the Federation Account, ensuring transparency and accountability.
Key features of the TSA framework, FIRS noted, include improved efficiency, multiple PSSPs, transparent onboarding, and market expansion, all aimed at simplifying tax payments for Nigerians nationwide.
FIRS also highlighted that the ongoing national tax reform, guided by the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, remains a cornerstone of Nigeria’s economic modernization, urging the public and politicians not to politicise technical processes.
