Just days after winning the Copa Libertadores, Flamengo has added the Brazilian Serie A title to its trophy cabinet, defeating Ceara 1-0 at the iconic Maracanã Stadium on Wednesday. This marks Flamengo’s ninth Brazilian championship and their third in the last seven seasons, solidifying their status as the country’s most popular football club.
Samuel Lino Nets Decisive Goal
The decisive goal came from Flamengo’s record signing, Samuel Lino, who found the net to secure the victory and maintain Flamengo’s five-point lead over Palmeiras with only one match remaining in the season. The win capped off a historic week for the club, which also saw them claim their fourth Copa Libertadores title with a 1-0 victory over Palmeiras in Lima, Peru.
Flamengo Joins Elite Brazilian Clubs with Double Title
By winning both the Copa Libertadores and the Serie A in the same season, Flamengo joins an elite group of Brazilian clubs to achieve the domestic-continental double, having previously accomplished the feat in 2019. Historically, only a few clubs such as Santos, which did it in 1962 and 1963, and Botafogo, last year, have managed the same.
Coach Filipe Luis praised his squad’s achievement, stating:
“In a few years, the players will realize what they have achieved. They are eternal!”
Neymar Shines for Santos
Meanwhile, Neymar starred for Santos, scoring a hat-trick in a 3-0 win against Juventude. This victory helped the São Paulo-based club move two points clear of the relegation zone, with one final match remaining against Cruzeiro, who currently hold third place.
Flamengo Eyes Treble in Intercontinental Cup
Flamengo’s season isn’t over yet, as the club now has the chance to complete a historic treble by winning the Intercontinental Cup in Qatar. The Carioca club will first face Cruz Azul, the CONCACAF champions, next Wednesday. The winner of that match will take on Pyramids FC, the African champions, with the final set against European champions Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in Doha on December 17.
This international opportunity offers Flamengo the chance to showcase their dominance on a global stage, following a record-breaking domestic and continental campaign.
