Former Australia Batter Damien Martyn in Coma with Meningitis

Former Australian cricket star Damien Martyn has been placed into an induced coma after being diagnosed with meningitis. The 54-year-old, who played 67 Test matches for Australia between 1992 and 2006, reportedly fell ill on 26 December and is currently receiving treatment in a hospital in Queensland.


Martyn’s Cricket Career Highlights

Martyn enjoyed a highly successful career for Australia, featuring in four Ashes series and winning two Cricket World Cups. He was known for his elegant right-handed batting and ability to perform under pressure. Some career highlights include:

  • 4,406 Test runs at an average of 46.37
  • 5,346 ODI runs from 208 matches at an average of 40, with 5 centuries and 37 fifties
  • Scoring 88 not out in the 2003 World Cup final against India, batting despite a broken finger
  • Representing Yorkshire as an overseas player in 2003

Martyn retired with immediate effect during the 2006-07 Ashes series before the third Test.

Close friend and former teammate Adam Gilchrist, speaking on behalf of Martyn’s family, confirmed he was receiving intensive care:

“He is getting the best of treatment, and Amanda and his family know that a lot of people are sending their prayers and best wishes.”

Former Australia and Northamptonshire coach Darren Lehmann also sent messages of support via social media:

“Lots of love and prayers… Keep strong and fighting legend.”

Former Australian Rules footballer Brad Hardie said on Perth’s 6PR radio station:

“Damien Martyn, the champ from WA, unfortunately took ill on Boxing Day and currently is residing in a Queensland hospital. I’d like everybody to have their best wishes and positive thoughts for Marto. Let’s hope he can pull through, because it’s really serious.”

Meningitis is an infection of the protective membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord, which can become life-threatening if not treated promptly. Early medical attention and hospitalization are critical for recovery.
