Former Cricketer Mohammad Azharuddin Sworn in as Telangana Cabinet Minister Amid Controversy

Former Indian cricket captain and Congress leader Mohammad Azharuddin officially took oath as a minister in the Telangana state cabinet on Friday, marking his formal entry into active political office. The oath of office was administered by Governor Jishnu Dev Varma at Raj Bhavan earlier in the day, solidifying Azharuddin’s transition from cricketing fame to political responsibility.

The decision to induct Azharuddin into the Telangana cabinet sparked immediate debate and political controversy. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) strongly opposed the move, accusing the Congress of using the appointment as a strategy to influence voters ahead of the upcoming Jubilee Hills by-election. Shashidhar Reddy, a senior BJP leader, criticised the induction, stating, “The proposal to give a cabinet berth to Mohammad Azharuddin is nothing but an attempt to woo and garner votes from a section of voters in the Jubilee Hills by-election and constitutes a gross violation of the model code of conduct.”

Reddy further noted that although the model code of conduct was not applicable across all of Hyderabad, the induction of Azharuddin could disproportionately affect electoral dynamics in Jubilee Hills, a constituency that the former cricketer himself is registered to vote in. Highlighting Azharuddin’s previous political activity, Reddy added, “He contested as a candidate from Jubilee Hills in the 2023 assembly elections. Offering him a ministry now clearly signals a mala fide intention by the Congress to appeal to a specific voter segment.”

The Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) defended the appointment, accusing the BJP and the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) of attempting to obstruct the inclusion of Azharuddin in Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy’s cabinet. TPCC spokesperson Syed Nizamuddin called the BJP complaint a politically motivated effort to deny minorities proper representation in the state government.

Azharuddin’s induction is widely interpreted as a strategic move to ensure minority representation in the cabinet. Telangana Assembly currently comprises 119 legislators, and prior to this appointment, the cabinet had no representation from the minority community. By including Azharuddin, Congress signals a conscious effort to address this gap. Senior party leaders had reportedly requested the inclusion of Azharuddin to strengthen the party’s appeal among minority voters, particularly ahead of critical by-polls in the Jubilee Hills constituency.

The All India Congress Committee (AICC) formally approved Azharuddin’s appointment, further reflecting the national leadership’s support for the decision. Political analysts note that the Congress’s strategy aligns with broader considerations for upcoming elections, including the Bihar Assembly polls, where Muslim voters constitute a significant electoral bloc. By positioning Azharuddin as a minister, the party is aiming to consolidate minority voter support both within Telangana and as part of its national electoral calculations.

Before becoming a minister, Azharuddin was nominated as a Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) under the Governor’s quota by the Telangana government in late August 2025. His prior electoral experience includes contesting the Jubilee Hills Assembly segment in the 2023 Telangana elections, although he was unsuccessful in that attempt.

The induction of Azharuddin as a cabinet minister has drawn attention both for its symbolic and strategic significance. As a celebrated sports figure, Azharuddin brings high public visibility and personal popularity, which could translate into political capital for Congress in key constituencies. At the same time, his appointment addresses a long-standing concern about the absence of minority representation in the state cabinet, signaling inclusivity and reinforcing the Congress party’s image as attentive to diverse community interests.

The BJP, however, continues to frame the appointment as politically opportunistic, highlighting concerns about electoral manipulation. Party sources allege that using cabinet positions to influence voters ahead of by-elections undermines the fairness of the political process and constitutes a breach of democratic norms. The sharp political exchanges between Congress and BJP on this issue are expected to intensify as the Jubilee Hills by-poll approaches.

Observers note that Azharuddin’s presence in the cabinet may have broader implications beyond Telangana. Given the Congress’s focus on minority representation and outreach in multiple states, his induction may be leveraged as an example of the party’s commitment to inclusivity. Senior party strategists see Azharuddin’s appointment as a dual-purpose decision: addressing immediate political requirements in Telangana while also projecting a pro-minority image nationally.

For Azharuddin, the transition from cricketing legend to cabinet minister marks a significant shift in career trajectory. His inclusion reflects the increasingly common trend in Indian politics of celebrated sports personalities entering electoral politics, leveraging public recognition to influence policy and governance. In Telangana, his portfolio and responsibilities as a minister are anticipated to include active engagement with community welfare initiatives, minority representation issues, and development projects aligned with state government priorities.

The political controversy surrounding his appointment is likely to remain a topic of debate in the run-up to the Jubilee Hills by-election, with parties seeking to capitalize on public perception and voter sentiment. While Congress emphasizes minority inclusion and electoral equity, BJP’s criticism frames the induction as a tactical maneuver, underscoring the contentious nature of cabinet appointments in politically sensitive constituencies.

In conclusion, Mohammad Azharuddin’s swearing-in as a Telangana cabinet minister represents a landmark political development for the state. It simultaneously addresses representation gaps, enhances the Congress party’s appeal among minority voters, and underscores the growing influence of public figures from non-political domains entering governance. While the move has drawn criticism from the BJP and sparked political debate, it also provides the Congress with an opportunity to strengthen its electoral standing in Jubilee Hills and beyond, reflecting the interplay of strategy, representation, and popularity in contemporary Indian politics.
