Former Liverpool Co-Owner Tom Hicks Dies at 79: Remembering a Controversial Sports Mogul

Tom Hicks, the former co-owner of Liverpool Football Club, has passed away at the age of 79. The American businessman died peacefully at his home in Dallas, Texas, surrounded by his family, leaving behind a legacy marked by both remarkable sporting achievements and controversial decisions.

Early Life and Background

Born in 1946 in Houston, Texas, Tom Hicks emerged as a prominent figure in American business and sports. Over the years, he became known for his bold investments in major sports franchises, spanning football (soccer), ice hockey, and baseball. Despite controversies surrounding his ownership periods, Hicks’ influence on American and international sports remains notable.

Liverpool Football Club: A Tumultuous Tenure

Hicks, along with business partner George Gillett, acquired Liverpool FC in 2007. Their ownership period, which lasted until 2010, was marked by financial struggles and fan dissatisfaction. During their tenure, Liverpool accrued debts of approximately £237 million, and promised projects such as renovations at Anfield and plans for a new stadium failed to materialize.

The duo ultimately sold Liverpool to Fenway Sports Group, but not before their management style left a lasting impression—largely negative—on the club’s passionate fanbase.

Achievements in American Sports

Outside of football, Hicks had a significant impact on American sports. He owned the Dallas Stars ice hockey team from 1995 to 2011. Under his ownership, the Stars won consecutive Central Division titles from 1996 to 1998, culminating in a Stanley Cup victory in 1999.

Hicks also owned the Texas Rangers baseball team between 1998 and 2010. During this period, the Rangers captured three American League West Division titles and reached the World Series final in 2010, finishing as runners-up.

Family Life and Legacy

Despite his high-profile career in sports, Hicks’ family was central to his life. A statement from his six children emphasized that “of everything he accomplished in his remarkable life, Tom Hicks’ most cherished title was ‘Dad.’”

The statement continued:

“No matter the trials and tribulations he faced in life, he was constant in his generosity and love for his family. He remains a guiding force for our family, and we are deeply honoured to continue expanding his legacy. Although we are devastated by this loss, we are profoundly grateful to have been his children.”

Hicks is survived by his wife of 35 years, Cinda, and their children.

Remembering Tom Hicks

Tom Hicks’ life was a complex mix of business acumen, sporting achievement, and controversy. While his tenure at Liverpool remains a cautionary tale for football ownership, his contributions to American sports, particularly with the Dallas Stars and Texas Rangers, highlight his success as a sports mogul.

From Houston to Dallas and across the Atlantic to Liverpool, Hicks’ legacy will be remembered both for its triumphs and its trials, leaving an indelible mark on the worlds of football, hockey, and baseball.
