Former Duke standout and Oklahoma City Thunder forward Kyle Singler was arrested last week following an alleged domestic violence incident in rural Oklahoma, according to police reports. The 36-year-old ex-NBA player was charged Tuesday with misdemeanor assault and battery in the presence of a child.
Details of the Incident
The arrest occurred Thursday in Whitefield, Oklahoma, approximately 90 miles southeast of Tulsa near the Arkansas border. Police responded after a call reported that Singler was allegedly chasing a woman outside a residence. Authorities stated that Singler’s girlfriend told them he grabbed her by the head and shoved her to the ground. Officers observed finger outlines on her face and visible marks on her arm. The couple’s child was reportedly present during the alleged altercation.
Singler did not provide a statement to authorities and reportedly did not cooperate during the investigation. Police also noted that he appeared to be under the influence of narcotics at the time of the incident. Following his arrest, Singler was released on bail.
Singler’s Basketball Background
Kyle Singler enjoyed a successful basketball career, both at the collegiate and professional levels. He played four seasons at Duke University (2007–2011), helping lead the team to a national championship in 2010. Singler was named Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA Tournament that year, highlighting his impact on college basketball.
Singler was selected in the second round of the 2011 NBA Draft by the Detroit Pistons, where he spent more than two seasons. He later joined the Oklahoma City Thunder, ultimately playing six seasons in the league. Across his NBA career, Singler averaged 6.5 points and 2.9 rebounds per game before retiring in 2018.
Previous Concerns
This incident follows nearly a year after Singler raised eyebrows in the basketball world with cryptic Instagram videos, in which he expressed fear for his personal safety. Those posts prompted an outpouring of support from former teammates and fans alike, highlighting concern for the former NBA star’s well-being.
Implications and Public Response
The case has sparked discussions about domestic violence in professional sports, particularly concerning former and current NBA players. While Singler’s career achievements remain notable, this arrest could significantly impact his public image and post-NBA endeavors.
As investigations continue, authorities have emphasized the importance of handling allegations of domestic violence seriously, especially when children are involved.
