The French government is seeking a three-month suspension of Chinese online retailer Shein’s website following the discovery of illegal products, including childlike sex dolls and banned weapons, being sold on the platform.
Lawyers representing Shein appeared in a Paris court on Friday to respond to the government’s request, which aims to ensure that Shein’s online marketplace complies fully with French law.
Shein’s Marketplace Already Disabled
Shein disabled its marketplace in France—where third-party sellers list their products—on November 5, 2025, after authorities flagged illegal items. However, the main site selling Shein-branded clothing remains accessible to consumers.
The French state argues that a temporary suspension of three months is necessary for Shein to demonstrate that it has implemented measures to prevent illegal sales.
“Article 6.3 of France’s digital economy law empowers judges to take measures to prevent or halt harm caused by online content,” authorities noted in their filing.
Court to Consider Website Suspension
The hearing also summoned major internet service providers, including Bouygues Telecom, Free, Orange, and SFR, to examine whether they should temporarily block access to Shein’s website in France.
The court will determine whether such a suspension is proportionate, taking into account European Union law and relevant human rights considerations. The Paris prosecutor’s office cautioned that a three-month suspension could be viewed as “disproportionate” under the European Court of Human Rights case law if Shein proves it has ceased all illegal sales.
Nonetheless, the prosecutor fully supports the government’s demand that Shein provide evidence of actions taken to halt sales of prohibited goods.
Broader EU and U.S. Scrutiny
France’s move reflects a wider scrutiny of Chinese online retailers under the EU Digital Services Act, which targets illegal online content, unsafe consumer products, and unfair competition.
In parallel, the U.S. is also investigating Shein. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton announced an inquiry into whether Shein violated state laws concerning unethical labor practices and the sale of unsafe products.
Shein, one of the largest fast-fashion retailers globally, faces increasing regulatory challenges as governments tighten oversight on e-commerce marketplaces, particularly those selling through third-party sellers.
