Funso Doherty, former Lagos State governorship candidate, has criticized the Lagos State Government’s proposed ₦4.237 trillion 2026 budget, describing it as extravagant and lacking fiscal discipline.
In an open letter dated December 11, 2025, addressed to the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Doherty highlighted what he called questionable spending plans, including:
- ₦20.665 billion for vehicles for 40 lawmakers, implying ₦516 million per member.
- ₦212 million for 20 office tables and chairs, averaging ₦10.6 million per unit.
- ₦4.5 billion for 40 generators for the House of Assembly.
- ₦6.22 billion for 40 properties in Lagos and Abuja.
- ₦217 million for a single 13-seater bus for the Parastatals Monitoring Office.
- ₦186.6 billion in consultancy and professional fees, nearly 15% of the recurrent budget.
Doherty argued that the budget was misstated by nearly ₦400 billion, noting that debt repayments were wrongly included in recurrent expenditures. He also pointed out that sectoral allocations totaled only ₦3.4 trillion, far below the proposed budget.
He criticized the disproportionate spending on lawmakers compared to social sectors, stating that education, health, housing, and water received just 17% of total allocations, despite high failure rates in public schools and limited access to essential services.
Doherty called for greater transparency in the budgeting process, urging the legislature to make full budget details publicly available before passage into law.
