Genevieve Nnaji Slams Controversial Tweet Advising Igbo Men Against Marrying Igbo Women

Nollywood icon Genevieve Nnaji has fired back at a controversial tweet that advised Igbo men to avoid marrying women from their own ethnic group.

The tweet, which sparked widespread debate on X, suggested that Igbo men should seek wives from East Africa, particularly Rwanda, instead of risking false accusations from Igbo women. It read:

“Dear Igbo men, instead of marrying Igbo woman that’ll falsely accuse you of raping your daughter, better look outside for a wife… Go to East Africa, especially Rwanda and pick a damsel.”

Reacting to the post, Genevieve, an Igbo woman from Mbaise, Imo State, condemned the suggestion:

“In other words, instead of checking yourself and taking accountability, go for the unsuspecting and carry on with your evil. Got it.”

While some argued that the tweet targeted false accusers and not all women, Nnaji stressed the danger of stereotyping:

“The same way a woman can’t tell an abusive man apart from a good one is the same way you shouldn’t say avoid all Igbo women. Not all women.”

Her response has reignited conversations on social media about personal accountability, stereotypes, and the broader implications of generalizing entire communities based on the actions of a few.
