Glen Powell and Colman Domingo “Out of Control” in Iconic Scene from The Running Man, Says Director Edgar Wright

Director Edgar Wright recently shared why one particular moment from his 2025 dystopian action thriller remake, The Running Man, stood out during filming. Starring Glen Powell, Colman Domingo, Josh Brolin, Lee Pace, Michael Cera, and Emilia Jones, the film brings a modern twist to the 1987 classic originally starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Here’s an inside look at the scene that “felt out of control in the best way” and why the performances of Powell and Domingo impressed the director so much.

The Scene That Stole the Show

Speaking to PEOPLE at the New York City premiere on November 9, 2025, Wright highlighted a scene between Powell’s Ben Richards and Domingo’s Bobby T. The sequence takes place during the deadly reality show at the center of the film’s plot.

“The game show scenes were some of the most fun to film because they felt kind of out of control in the way that Colman had the crowd going,” Wright explained.

In the scene, Bobby T, the charismatic and ruthless host, whips the audience into a frenzy, encouraging them to root against the contestants. Meanwhile, Ben Richards is handcuffed and introduced to the bloodthirsty crowd, creating an electrifying moment of tension and chaos.

“It felt sort of kind of out of control in the best way,” Wright added, praising the actors for their energy and spontaneity.

Colman Domingo: The Crowd’s Maestro

Wright had nothing but praise for Colman Domingo, who commands the room in every scene he appears in.

“He was amazing, like he was his own warmup man. All his scenes he’s in front of extras, and he just had them whipped up. He had them in the palm of his hand by the end of day one,” Wright said.

Domingo’s ability to energize the crowd and keep the scene dynamic made the sequence stand out as a highlight of the film.

Glen Powell Brings Relatable Everyman Energy

Director Edgar Wright also commended Glen Powell for his performance as the lead contestant, Ben Richards.

“I knew Glen a little bit before we started filming, and so when his name came up in contention for it, I was so excited because I knew he was the guy,” Wright said.

Powell’s portrayal brings a relatable, “everyman” quality to the role, which Wright says makes the film’s action sequences more compelling.

“What’s great about Glen is he is relatable, and I think that makes the action more exciting,” Wright added.

The Cast of The Running Man

The 2025 remake also features a stellar ensemble, including:

  • Josh Brolin

  • Michael Cera
  • Emilia Jones
  • William H. Macy

The movie reimagines the original 1987 film, combining high-stakes action with social commentary and Wright’s signature kinetic style.
