Governor Bago’s APC Wins All 25 Council Areas in Controversial Niger State Election

The Niger State Independent Electoral Commission (NSIEC) has declared that All Progressives Congress (APC) candidates won all 25 chairmanship positions in the local government elections held on November 1 across the state.

The announcement followed the collation and verification of results from all local government areas.

However, the elections under Governor Umar Bago’s administration were marred by tension, violence, and allegations of irregularities. Reports indicate that the governor’s convoy was attacked by angry youths in his hometown of Bida shortly after the polls, following a cash distribution event, leaving several vehicles damaged and one aide injured.

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) also accused NSIEC of omitting its name and logo from the ballot papers, while reports emerged of violence and voter apathy in some areas.

In Kontagora Central Ward, police allegedly opened fire during a clash, killing two people and injuring three others. In Magama Local Government Area, residents reportedly set election materials on fire after discovering missing result sheets.

Despite these controversies, NSIEC maintained that the elections were free and fair, confirming that APC candidates won in all 25 councils, including Agaie, Agwara, Bida, Borgu, Bosso, Chanchaga, Edati, Gbako, Gurara, Katcha, Kontagora, Lapai, Lavun, Magama, Mariga, Mashegu, Mokwa, Munya, Paikoro, Rafi, Rijau, Shiroro, Suleja, Tafa, and Wushishi.

The commission stated that certificates of return would be presented to all elected chairmen after completing the required administrative procedures.
