Graham Potter Open to Sweden National Team Job After Tomasson Sacking

Former Chelsea and West Ham manager Graham Potter has expressed interest in taking over as Sweden’s head coach following Jon Dahl Tomasson’s dismissal.

Graham Potter, the English manager recently dismissed by West Ham United, has revealed he is open to becoming the next head coach of the Sweden men’s national football team. His comments come after Sweden parted ways with Jon Dahl Tomasson following a disappointing start to their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign.

Potter’s Connection with Swedish Football

Potter, 50, has a long-standing connection with Swedish football, having managed Ostersunds FK from 2011 to 2018. During his tenure, he guided the club from the fourth tier to the top division and led them to lift the Swedish Cup in 2017, establishing a reputation for tactical innovation and player development.

“I’m actually in Sweden right now, in my house in Sweden,” Potter told Fotbollskanalen.
“I’m between jobs and just left the Premier League. I’m open to anything, really, where I feel I can help. The job as head coach of the Swedish national team is fantastic. I have feelings for Sweden. I love the country and I love Swedish football. I have a lot to be grateful for towards Swedish football.”

Premier League Experience

Potter’s recent career in England included managing Swansea City and Brighton & Hove Albion, before joining Chelsea in 2022. He was dismissed after seven months at Stamford Bridge. His last role at West Ham United also ended after only eight months, with the team securing just three points from their opening five Premier League matches this season.

Sweden’s Current Situation

Sweden are currently bottom of Group B in 2026 World Cup qualifying with just one point from four games. Despite having a talented forward line including Liverpool’s Alexander Isak and Arsenal’s Viktor Gyokeres, the team has struggled in their opening matches, drawing with Slovenia and losing to Kosovo and Switzerland.

The national team now faces the challenge of rebuilding under new leadership, with Potter emerging as a strong candidate due to his previous success in Swedish football and familiarity with the country’s football culture.

Why Potter Could Be Sweden’s Ideal Choice

  • Proven success in Sweden: Elevated Ostersunds FK from fourth tier to Allsvenskan and won the Swedish Cup.
  • European experience: Managed in the Premier League and Champions League.
  • Tactical adaptability: Known for innovative systems and player development.
  • Cultural fit: Expressed personal affection for Sweden and its football.

Potter’s potential appointment could signal a new era for Sweden, combining his experience abroad with his understanding of Swedish football philosophy.
