Gunmen Attack Former Governor Chris Ngige’s Convoy in Anambra, Police Escort Injured

The convoy of former Anambra State Governor Chris Ngige came under a brazen attack on the Nkpor–Nnobi Road in Idemili North. Ngige narrowly avoided harm as he was not travelling with the convoy at the time.

According to eyewitnesses and Ngige’s former media aide, Fred Chukwuelobe, assailants disguised in police and army uniforms opened fire on the pilot vehicle. A police officer escorting the convoy was injured and had his gun and uniform stolen. Tragically, a woman recording the attack was fatally shot, and a shop owner who ran out to observe the commotion was wounded but is expected to survive.

The Anambra State Police Command confirmed the attack and launched a state-wide manhunt. A white Mercedes-Benz SUV, reportedly snatched by the attackers, was recovered following a coordinated pursuit involving multiple tactical units, including the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) and Special Anti-Cultism Unit (SPACS).

SP Tochukwu Ikenga, police spokesperson, stated that the officers engaged the assailants in a gunfight, forcing them to abandon the vehicle. The injured police officer is stable and receiving treatment.

The attack, one of the most daring against a former governor’s convoy in recent years, has intensified calls for enhanced security measures across Anambra State.
