Haryana Youth Killed in Guatemala After Attempting ‘Dunki’ Route to the US

Kaithal, Haryana, November 2, 2025: In a tragic case highlighting the perils of illegal migration, an 18-year-old youth from Haryana, identified as Yuvraj, has been killed in Guatemala after being held hostage by human traffickers, according to his family. Yuvraj, the son of an agriculturist from Mohna village in Kaithal district, had left home in October last year with hopes of reaching the United States via the dangerous and illegal “dunki” route, which is increasingly used by young Indians seeking employment abroad.

The family, which has been following Yuvraj’s journey anxiously, first lost contact shortly after he departed. His maternal uncle, Gurpej Singh, told news agencies that the family had been assured by intermediaries that Yuvraj would reach the US safely through a network of contacts, and that he had left after passing Class 12 with aspirations of supporting the family financially.

However, their hopes soon turned into distress. Months after Yuvraj’s departure, the family began receiving alarming communications from traffickers, locally referred to as “donkers.” Videos sent to the family showed Yuvraj and another youth from Punjab being held captive in Guatemala, with repeated ransom demands from the traffickers.

“The family was shocked to see the video evidence of Yuvraj being held hostage,” Gurpej Singh said. “The traffickers demanded money at multiple stages, claiming it was necessary for his safe passage, but the payments did not guarantee his safety.”

According to the family, they had initially engaged three travel agents based in Haryana, paying large sums in the hope of securing Yuvraj’s safe journey. “Overall, the family paid anywhere between ₹40 to ₹50 lakh to the travel agents and the traffickers. Sadly, it appears that most of this money never reached the people holding him abroad,” Gurpej Singh explained.

The ordeal culminated when one of the traffickers contacted the family claiming Yuvraj had been killed and demanded an additional ₹3 lakh to provide proof. After paying this sum, the family received photos and a death certificate confirming his death.

Law enforcement has intervened to some extent. The family reported the matter to the police, leading to the arrest of two local agents in Haryana who had facilitated the illegal travel. However, the arrest did not prevent the tragedy abroad, and the family was later officially informed about Yuvraj’s death.

The case underscores the extreme dangers associated with the “dunki” route, a clandestine pathway often used by young Indians to reach the United States illegally. These routes are controlled by networks of traffickers who exploit migrants, often subjecting them to abuse, hostage situations, and extortion. Many migrants on such journeys are deported after entering the US illegally, while others face life-threatening situations abroad, as seen in Yuvraj’s case.

Authorities in India have repeatedly warned about the risks associated with irregular migration. Despite this, the lure of overseas employment and the promise of better opportunities continue to drive young people to pay enormous sums to agents and traffickers, often putting their lives at extreme risk.

Human rights and migration experts point out that traffickers exploit both the desperation of families and the naivety of young aspirants. “These networks operate on trust, fear, and coercion. Families pay large sums hoping for safety, but the migrants are often subjected to violence and extortion,” said a migration policy analyst.

In Haryana and Punjab, similar cases have been reported over the years, with several youth disappearing or being held hostage along such clandestine routes. Local authorities have started awareness campaigns to caution families and students against engaging with illegal migration networks. However, the demand for overseas employment continues to fuel these risky ventures.

For Yuvraj’s family, the loss has been devastating. Gurpej Singh described the emotional toll on the household, recalling how the family repeatedly tried to reach the traffickers, paid enormous sums in hope, and yet received the worst possible news. “We were ready to do anything to get him back alive. Every day was filled with anxiety and fear. But unfortunately, we lost him,” he said.

The incident has also prompted calls for stricter action against travel agents and traffickers who exploit vulnerable families. Human rights activists have urged authorities to strengthen monitoring of illegal migration channels and ensure that traffickers are brought to justice, both locally and internationally.

Experts warn that cases like Yuvraj’s are not isolated. The “dunki” route, which involves complex travel through Latin American countries before attempting entry into the United States, exposes migrants to violent criminal networks. Many families remain unaware of the true risks involved, often trusting local agents who promise legal or semi-legal routes to foreign countries.

Yuvraj’s tragic death is a stark reminder of the human cost of illegal migration and the need for comprehensive preventive measures. Authorities have appealed to families to verify all travel plans, seek legal avenues for migration, and report suspicious agents or networks to law enforcement.

This case adds to a growing body of evidence about the dangers of irregular migration from India to the US and other countries. While government and community organizations continue to raise awareness, the combination of economic aspirations and aggressive traffickers makes these journeys extremely hazardous.

Yuvraj’s family has now called for stricter regulation of travel agents and criminal action against those facilitating illegal migration. They also hope that by sharing his story, other families might be warned of the risks involved in clandestine migration networks.

As investigations continue in Haryana and with international authorities, the hope remains that justice will be served and that more awareness can prevent similar tragedies in the future. Yuvraj’s untimely death underscores the urgent need for vigilance, law enforcement intervention, and widespread public education regarding the dangers of illegal migration through “dunki” routes.

This heartbreaking incident not only exposes the human toll of trafficking networks but also highlights the importance of safe, legal migration channels, and the pressing need for coordinated international efforts to combat human trafficking.
