Hema Malini Opens Up About Dharmendra’s Final Days: “We Were All There—Esha, Ahana, Sunny, Bobby…”

The world was deeply saddened when veteran Bollywood superstar Dharmendra, fondly known as Dharam Paaji, passed away on November 24, 2025. Just weeks prior, the actor had been hospitalised at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai for respiratory issues, sparking concern among fans and colleagues alike. When he returned home for continued treatment, hope was high for his recovery. Tragically, the joy was short-lived, leaving the Deol family devastated. In a heartfelt interview with The Times of India, Dharmendra’s wife and veteran actor Hema Malini has shared candid memories of coping with his hospitalisation, his final days, and the shock of his demise.

A Month of Struggle and Hope

Reflecting on that difficult period, Hema Malini described the emotional rollercoaster the family experienced. “It was a companionship that stood the test of time. It was an inconsolable shock. It has been terrible because for a month we were struggling when he was not well. We were constantly trying to cope with whatever was happening in the hospital,” she said. She recalled the family’s efforts to remain close, noting, “We were all there—I, Esha, Ahana, Sunny, Bobby—all together. In the past, there had been instances when he went to the hospital and came back home fine. We thought iss baar bhi aa jayenge.”

Even amidst uncertainty, there were small moments of warmth and connection. Hema shared that Dharmendra remained himself in spirit, interacting with his family and offering love and encouragement. “He was talking to us nicely. On my birthday (October 16), he even wished me,” she said, highlighting the simple yet profound gestures that marked their companionship.

Preparing for a Milestone That Never Came

Hema Malini revealed that the family had been planning to celebrate Dharmendra’s 90th birthday on December 8. “His birthday was coming up on December 8, when he was turning 90, and we were thinking of celebrating it nicely. The preparations were on, and then suddenly, he was not there. To personally see him sink was very difficult. Nobody should have to go through this kind of situation,” she said, her words capturing the shock and helplessness the family felt.

The veteran actor also reflected on the lessons life has taught her about the passage of time and the inevitability of loss. “Time doesn’t wait for anybody,” she said. Despite her acceptance of life’s realities, Hema admitted to the constant ache of missing her partner. “It is important for us to keep him alive in our hearts and memories,” she added, emphasizing the role of love and remembrance in continuing his legacy.

Struggling Under the Spotlight

The media attention during Dharmendra’s hospitalisation added another layer of stress for the family. Hema Malini acknowledged the challenges they faced navigating public scrutiny during such a sensitive time. “Sunny was getting upset and angry. We all were going through an emotional time and the media was running behind our cars… harassment bahut hua,” she said, revealing the pressure of managing privacy while coping with grief.

Remembering a Legend

Dharmendra’s legacy in Indian cinema is unparalleled. Fondly called the He-Man of Bollywood, he inspired generations with his charisma, action-packed performances, and versatility. From classics like SholayChupke Chupke, and Seeta Aur Geeta to more recent appearances, his presence on screen was matched by the warmth he shared with family and fans alike. His passing marks the end of an era, but through the memories shared by Hema Malini, his children, and the millions who admired him, his spirit continues to live on.

Hema’s reflections on their life together highlight the depth of their bond, a partnership that endured the highs and lows of both life and cinema. Through illness, hospitalization, and the heartbreak of losing him, she remains committed to honoring his memory.

Dharam Paaji may no longer walk among us, but as Hema Malini poignantly puts it, he will continue to live on in the hearts of his family, fans, and Indian cinema forever.
