House of Reps Member Ikenga Ugochinyere Defects from PDP to APP

Ikenga Ugochinyere, a member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives representing Ideato North/Ideato South Federal Constituency in Imo State, has formally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Action Peoples Party (APP), delivering a fresh setback to the opposition party.

Ugochinyere made the announcement on the floor of the House on Wednesday, marking a significant political shift. A vocal and influential lawmaker, he has long been a prominent figure within the PDP caucus in the House of Representatives.

The defection comes after a controversial attempt by PDP ward and local government officials in Imo State to expel him over alleged anti-party activities and insubordination. However, the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) later nullified the expulsion, declaring it unconstitutional and without effect.

In December, the PDP, through its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, emphasized that ward and local government executives lack the authority to discipline or expel a serving National Assembly member without due process and the involvement of the National Executive Committee.

Ugochinyere’s move to the APP underscores ongoing tensions within the PDP and highlights the evolving political landscape in Imo State ahead of upcoming elections.
