Award-winning singer Kcee, formerly one half of the hip-hop duo KC Presh, has opened up about the pressure he felt when his partner, Presh, suggested they pursue solo careers.
In a recent interview with Yanga FM Lagos, Kcee clarified that their split was not due to disagreements or conflicts within the group, nor because of his brother E-Money’s plans to start a record label. Instead, the separation stemmed from their different musical styles.
“KC Presh’s breakup wasn’t due to any disagreement. We didn’t have any issue. Presh was more of an R&B artist, while I do Afropop. We did a couple of records together, and at some point, he suggested we do solo projects. The idea came from him,” Kcee said.
The singer admitted that he felt pressure accepting the suggestion, as many fans considered Presh the stronger vocalist:
“I accepted it, but I was under pressure because he has a better voice than me. People were praising him, saying he was the one holding the group together, so he was very confident. But they don’t know the work that goes on behind the scenes. I was the one doing most of the work behind the scenes.”
Kcee noted that going solo ultimately allowed him to achieve greater success, producing hit songs and working harder on his career. He also revealed that he later reached out to Presh to join his record label, 5ive Music, but Presh declined, still upset over how their split had unfolded.
The duo, who rose to fame after KC Presh won the Star Quest talent show in 2002, released three albums together before their separation in the 2010s.
