The Oyo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has strongly criticized the recent National Convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) held in Ibadan, calling it a “condemnable carnival of shame, lawlessness, and impunity.”
The APC claimed that despite multiple court orders instructing the suspension of the convention, the faction led by Governor Seyi Makinde proceeded with the event over the weekend.
According to the opposition party, delegates allegedly from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory converged in Ibadan to elect new national executives for the PDP.
In a statement released on Sunday, APC Publicity Secretary Olawale Sadare accused Governor Makinde of creating unnecessary hardship for residents during what the APC described as an “ill-fated show.” The statement alleged that commercial transport operators were forced to suspend their services and attend the convention venue to create the impression of a massive turnout, portraying a “false narrative” to outsiders.
“PDP has been synonymous with impunity, and this was evident again when a faction within the party ignored the judiciary to stage an illegal procession, which they labeled a national convention,” the statement read.
The APC further criticized Makinde for allegedly neglecting protesters who were expressing grievances over the demolition of properties along the proposed Ibadan Circular Road. Instead of addressing the concerns, the party claimed, the governor worsened residents’ suffering by clearing commercial vehicles, motorcycles, and tricycles from major roads to “paint a picture of a successful convention.”
The opposition also alleged that a portion of September’s allocations to Oyo State’s 33 local government councils was used to fund the event, noting that many PDP governors reportedly declined to contribute financially. The APC warned that “every kobo of public funds used on this failed PDP project would be accounted for sooner rather than later.”
According to the statement, the “kangaroo convention” signals what the APC described as “the beginning of the burial of the PDP,” asserting that Governor Makinde and his allies have “chosen cremation over interment for their party.”
The APC advised the warring PDP factions to reconcile and “prepare for possible relevance in the 2031 general elections,” noting that they have already “lost 2027.”
