Staff of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBUL), Lapai, Niger State, have launched a two-week warning strike over unpaid allowances and other unresolved entitlements. The industrial action commenced on Wednesday following an emergency meeting of the Joint Action Committee (JAC), after repeated ultimatums to the Niger State government and the university’s Governing Council went unheeded.
JAC Chairman Usman Alhaji Adamu explained that staff have long been awaiting payments dating back to previous agreements. “Some of the unresolved issues include outstanding Earned Academic Allowance and Earned Allowance for teaching and non-teaching staff from the 2009 Federal Government agreements, as well as the full integration of Earned Academic Allowance into salaries,” he said.
Other pending demands include salary adjustments, university administrative processes, pension contributions, implementation of the 2023 national minimum wage, settlement of 2021 wage arrears, payment of N20,000 monthly wage awards for October and November 2024, and proper remittance of pension contributions.
Adamu warned that if the demands are not met after the two-week warning strike, the JAC may escalate the industrial action to an indefinite strike.
